Gout and Alternative Therapy
by Steve Hill

First a definition- Gout manifests itself by what is sometimes severe joint pain also swellings and inflammation around the surrounding area. It tends to affect the bodies extremities the most common point being the large joint of the big toe but it can occur in your feet, ankles, hands, wrists, elbows and knees. It often occurs rapidly overnight without any advance warning. These attacks can last for one to two weeks and repeat themselves at varying intervals.

The pain that ensues from a gout attack is caused by the build of uric acid crystals settling in the joint area. Uric acid is a failure of your kidneys to clean your blood as efficiently as they should eventually the uric acid crystallizes and settles in the joint spaces.

Being a long time sufferer from gout and someone who has lived in various parts of the country and as a result has had numerous GPs I have been prescribed many different types of medication. None seemed to act rapidly and it was difficult to tell if the eventual disappearance of the pain was due to the medication or the crystals disappearing naturally.

As so often happens I mentioned to a friend, who had noticed my limp that I was suffering from gout again. Why don't you see your doctor was his reply. I explained my previous experiences, as a result he suggested that I Acupuncture, something he had used for some time.

My first visit to the acupuncturist involved an examination, giving details of medical history and having my tongue, eyes and pulse checked. Then came the actual acupuncture, I must admit to a slight apprehension at this stage, but the needles were amazingly fine and resulted in nothing more than a slight tingly feeling (nothing compared to the gout).

After surprisingly few treatments there was a definite improvement and there has been the added bonus in that the number of gout attacks I get seem to be a lot less.

If you are a sufferer from gout and are also not keen on taking pills and the chance of unknown side effects then I suggest you try acupuncture.
